Effect of surface tension on the Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability induced nonlinear structure at two fluid interface and their stabilization

چکیده
The effect of surface tension on the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability and Richtmyer – Meshkov (RM) instability induced development of nonlinear structures like spike and bubble at two fluid interface have been investigated .In case of RT instability, the surface tension reduces the velocity of the tip of both the bubble and the spike by the factor (1-k /3 kc ) where, kc =(h-l)g/T .For k > 3 kc , RT instability is stabilized. Any perturbation, whatever be its magnitude, results in stable large amplitude nonlinear oscillations. The RM instability is always stabilized by surface tension leading to nonlinear oscillation. Both the amplitude and the period of oscillation decreases monotonically as S = 12kT / (h+l) increases where k is the wave number. The maximum height attained by the peak of the nonlinear interfacial structures (spike or bubble) increases approximately logarithmically with the initial interface velocity resulting from the shock.

An experimental investigation of the shock-induced interfacial instability (RichtmyerMeshkov instability) is undertaken in an effort to study temporal evolution of interfacial perturbations in the nonlinear regime. The experiments are performed in a vertical shock tube with a square cross-section. A membraneless interface is prepared by retracting a sinusoidally shaped metal plate initially sep...

30 LLE Review, Volume 77 In inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions, a laser irradiation induces a shock wave propagating through the target. During the shock transit time, the ablation front travels at a constant velocity, and any surface perturbations could grow due to the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM)–like instability.1–5 Later, when a rarefaction wave reaches the ablation surface, the acceler...

A front-tracking/ghost-fluid method is introduced for simulations of fluid interfaces in compressible flows. The new method captures fluid interfaces using explicit front-tracking and defines interface conditions with the ghost-fluid method. Several examples of multiphase flow simulations, including a shock–bubble interaction, the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, ...

A large number of experimental investigations of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (a shock-induced interfacial instability) in the past have been carried out in shock tubes. In order to separate the two gases prior to the shock arrival, a plastic membrane, on the order of one micron thick, was often used. There is considerable uncertainty regarding the effects of the membrane and membrane frag...

Implosion process in laser fusion can be divided into three phases: start-up, acceleration and stagnation phases and various hydrodynamic instabilities appear in each phase. Analytical models are developed to study nonlinear evolutions of the hydrodynamic instabilities in these phases, and compared with multi-dimensional simulations. We mainly discuss the formation of double spiral structures c...
